A happy consequence of improving my Spanish was that my English grammar and overall understanding of the English language improved too! Who would have thought? I remember high school English with lots of focus on grammar and graphing a sentence; I was often overwhelmed and amiss. Grammar’s adverbs, adjectives, gerunds and prepositions is like a language in itself. It’s amazing how understanding grammar in another language improves your understanding of your own. It gives you the tools for learning all languages because you start to see how words function and the patterns languages contain. It also can help you become a better writer by learning structure and how to simplify sentences and paragraphs. I’ve found all kinds of cool things about English because of learning Spanish. You start to become familiar with the culture through the language and it helps you reflect on your own language and culture too! English in some ways is easier than Latin languages because of the neutral words. You don’t have to define the gender of every. single. word. Ugh! Go English! However Spanish is super phonetic which makes it so much easier to pronounce than someone learning English and having to guess how to say DOUGH and THROUGH. Even though they have the same endings, they are completely different sounding words. That NEVER happens in Spanish and ease of pronunciation is one of my favorite parts of the language! Go Spanish! That being said, language is an amazing tool for growing your mental capacity and overall language understanding-even your own. Another great reason to become bilingual!
